Tiger Lilly and the Princess

Tiger Lilly and the Princess

Graeme Ingham

Media Tie In / Doctor Who / Nonfiction

Children's fantasy...Support for right-wing populism in Europe has steadily gained attention from media and policy-makers over the past decade. Most of this attention, however, has been focused on the core supporters of right-wing populist parties (RPPs) – the members and the street activists – at the expense of the topic of this publication, the ‘reluctant radicals’. These are our main protagonists: the soft, uncommitted supporters of RPPs. They are crucial for two straightforward reasons: the reluctant radicals are the bulk of RPP support as well as those who can most easily be brought back to the mainstream, thereby depriving RPPs of their main electoral base. This publication is the first of a series produced within Counterpoint’s project ‘Recapturing Europe’s Reluctant Radicals’. Our aim here is to draw an accurate portrait of these voters by exploring the characteristics of the reluctant radicals in ten European countries, with a particular focus on France, Finland and the Netherlands. We aim to critically test some common assumptions – in particular, that right-wing populism is the preserve of disadvantaged young men – as well as outline the contours of the political and cultural context in which the data needs to be interpreted. The result is a better understanding of the diversity of the support for these parties as well as a more accurate reading of the context in which they arise – the histories, traumas, memories, resentments and fears that drive the choices of the reluctant radicals.

The Rest Of Me

The Rest Of Me

Matthew Farrington

Media Tie In / Doctor Who / Short Stories

In his second short-story installment Matthew Farrington again tackles issues of family, abuse, madness and the inherent competing human desires of surrender and survival. Part of the bulk of a larger work, The Rest of Me showcases Farrington’s shrewd talent for breaking through traditional barriers in fiction writing, concisely displaying the raw emotion of his subject in brief and moving prose.Book 1 of 5 in the Bubby Anthology.Robert, a social outcast all of his life, suddenly receives the powers of Bubby. In a flash, his life is completely turned around. In other words, the ladies dig him! When the world is threatened by an evil force, will the inexperienced Bubby be able to summon the strength to save it, and make it back in time for his many dates?ReviewOur introduction to the hero named Bubby is a funny, albeit short, one. Originally written in 1995, by then high school student, B. P. Draper, the jokes have aged well. While the characters are not as well-developed as I would have liked, I still empathize with the title character's desire to fit in. If I had to describe Bubby I in a sentence, I would say it is like a train wreck that you can't look away from because it is a hilarious, hilarious train wreck. Overall, Bubby I is an enjoyable satire of the superhero world. --Braden Erp

Star Tales - Steve Cole

Star Tales - Steve Cole

Graeme Ingham

Media Tie In / Doctor Who / Nonfiction

‘ Even though they’re gone from the world, they’re never gone from me.’ ****The Doctor is many things – curious, funny, brave, protective of her friends...and a shameless namedropper. While she and her companions battled aliens and travelled across the universe, the Doctor hinted at a host of previous, untold adventures with the great and the good: we discovered she got her sunglasses from Pythagoras (or was it Audrey Hepburn?); lent a mobile phone to Elvis; had an encounter with Amelia Earhart where she discovered that a pencil-thick spider web can stop a plane; had a 'wet weekend' with Harry Houdini, learning how to escape from chains underwater; and more. In this collection of new stories, Star Tales takes you on a rip-roaring ride through history, from 500BC to the swinging 60s, going deeper into the Doctor's notorious name-dropping and revealing the truth behind these anecdotes.
