What the Dog Saw and Other Adventures

What the Dog Saw and Other Adventures

Malcolm Gladwell

Business / Nonfiction / Psychology

What is the difference between choking and panicking? Why are there dozens of varieties of mustard but only one variety of ketchup? What do football players teach us about how to hire teachers? What does hair dye tell us about the history of the 20th century? In the past decade, Malcolm Gladwell has written three books that have radically changed how we understand our world and ourselves: The Tipping Point, Blink, and Outliers. Now, in What the Dog Saw, he brings together, for the first time, the best of his writing from The New Yorker over the same period. Here you'll find the bittersweet tale of the inventor of the birth control pill, and the dazzling creations of pasta sauce pioneer Howard Moscowitz. Gladwell sits with Ron Popeil, the king of the American kitchen, as he sells rotisserie ovens, and divines the secrets of Cesar Millan, the "dog whisperer" who can calm savage animals with the touch of his hand. He explores intelligence tests and ethnic profiling and why it was that employers in Silicon Valley once tripped over themselves to hire the same college graduate.

The thoughts and feeling I had when I was in prison wrongly convicted of attempted murder. The environment of prison is a strange place when you are not of that world. Inside Traitors

Inside Traitors

David Allen

Business / Nonfiction

I wrote this novel just after the burst of the Dot Com bubble, as a commentary to the insanity and self-indulgency that gripped Wall Street and American businesses during a time when no investment could fail and billionaires were created overnight. I wanted to explore the immoral side of the dot-com era greed that spread across America, but I also wanted to temper it around a story of overcoming life’s hardships.  Inside Traitors is this story. It is a contemporary novel about betrayal and the insatiable desire for money, but is woven around a story of overcoming inner torment, grief and life’s adversities.  This is my first released novel. The work is just fewer than 100,000 words in length.  I hope you enjoy it.

Cocaine

Cocaine

Donald Phillips

Leadership / Business / History

When Jack Ropell joined Customs and Excise he did not think it would ever be a life threateningly dangerous job. He also thought that Spain was a holiday destination. That was until he joined the anti-drug section. Then he changed his mind.Set in the decade of the nineties, this novel follows ten years in the life of Jack Ropell. Ropell was actually born in Yorkshire, but his parents moved to Canada when he was eleven. At twenty two he loses his younger sister to drugs while he is away from Quebec, Canada, at university in England. Driven by this and the continuing strife between his French mother and his Spanish/English father,Jack decides to stay in England when he graduates and join the British Customs and Excise. After two years in the job Jack gets to join the anti-drug squad and begins to find out what the real world is all about. The story follows his part in trying to prevent the ingress of drugs, in particular cocaine/crack, into Britain.During this decade cocaine production in Colombia was becoming professional and several Colombian drug barons were making more money than many countries or big corporations. National Police forces were struggling to contain the flood of cheaper and cheaper drugs into America and Continental Europe. This story is a fiction, but only in the characters involved. The actual story, the pain the suffering and the casual, but extreme violence used by the drug cartels against anyone who opposed them, is probably understated. One thing is for certain. it doesn't matter if you are a supplier, distributor, user or a lawman, sooner or later when cocaine is involved, it will ultimately become a matter of life or death.

The Dawn Patrol

The Dawn Patrol

Todd Kelsey

Business

When all of Europe falls to Hitler and England stands alone, Eric Wallace, a young RAF pilot, joins the men and women of England in a fierce, desperate battle against overwhelming odds, as they reach into their roots for courage and face the Nazis in a united act of defiance.Dawn Patrol opens in the present day, with Eric’s wife Edith telling their great grandson Billy about Order of the Dragonfly and the Battle of Britain, and how Edith came to know Eric. Edith was a ferry pilot in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, and flew Spitfires from the manufacturing plant to airfields. The rest of the novel follows the arc of the actual events of the Battle of Britain, as England made its stand against Hitler. The Summer of 1940 begins with Eric’s father and other courageous merchant seamen joining the Royal Navy to escort soldiers from France, in the Miracle of Dunkirk. Hermann Goering becomes a central character, the leader of the German Air Force, ruthlessly subjugating Europe. He is hungry to see the Royal Air Force destroyed, but he is overconfident, and high on morphine, from an injury in 1923. Edith delivers a Spitfire to Eric, and he is smitten by the feisty ferry pilot, even as he is eager to fly a Spitfire for the first time. He is afraid of dying but goes up in the sky nonetheless. Eric also fears becoming distracted by affection on the ground, in case it should make him too cautious in combat. Eric and the Royal Air Force face the German Air Force (the Luftwaffe) who have four times the number of planes. But Eric and the RAF pilots are fighting for their lives, to defend their families and the ones they love. President Roosevelt wants to help, but faces an election, and the Americans do not want another war. However, some Americans, such as the young Rudy Mitchell, come to England to join the Royal Air Force and do what they can to help. Winston Churchill leads the English people in a defiant stand, as England is surrounded, and the people of England send their young pilots in the air, in the hope of defending the skies.

The Social Security Benefits Hearing: A Client's Legal Guide

The Social Security Benefits Hearing: A Client's Legal Guide

Andrew Kinney

Business / Language / Writing

What is this Legal Guide about?Applying for Social Security disability benefits can be difficult for a number of reasons. A claim for Social Security benefits can take a few years. Denials have appeal deadlines. What may be most difficult for our clients at Hoglund Law Offices is that while you wait for Social Security to process your claim, you don’t feel well and you need the income.A young pastor explores the best path for his future ministry. His worldview is shattered by conversations with the Apostles John and Paul, as well as Christian leaders, from businessmen to pastors, from America to China. Restoring the “strategery” of the corporate Church to God’s original plan in Scripture is never easy, but it’s encouraging to hear from those who have faced similar questions in their own times. The biggest, hardest to swallow, and most helpful truth he found was where the business world and the Church in China found agreement: the difference between pastors and clergy.
