Broad target selection. Happy hunting. When the long-extinct Rovania are found still alive, steps are taken to integrate them into the modern age. When the newly commissioned Space Corps Ship Dark Star reaches Earth to pick up crew, Astrogator Cai and Captain Nick Steele come face to face with a dream made real—actual, living Rovania. Veloki has no interest in abiding by the wishes of his superiors, he wants a human to play with, and the other Rovania feel likewise. What does one do when confronted by the Lord of Madness? High Priest S’Rak is under suspicion of murder. Captain Jisten isn’t sure if the Loftoni is innocent or guilty, but he’s convinced that keeping Rak under guard is the best thing to do. Unfortunately, Rak doesn’t agree with him. As the Lord of Madness toys with them both, their relationship grows ever more strained. Rak slips away from his guards more than once, and Jisten grows increasingly desperate to bring the wayward priest to heel.

No cost is too high to preserve the Victory Prophecy. High Priest S’Rak is cursed with the ability to foretell the future. Sometimes. The problem with prophecy is that the gods get involved, and if any god is working to complete one, there’s always another god working to prevent it. S’Rak knows that something bad is coming. He knows that he can leave and avoid a great deal of pain and suffering and woe. Captain Jisten doesn’t have mystical abilities to rely on, so he relies on his own senses and on logic. A murder in the city of a person he holds dear drives a deeper wedge between the already-strained relations he has with the high priest. The events of the summer continue to haunt him even as S’Rak is named a murder suspect.

Peace is the short span of time between wars. Captain Jisten and High Priest S’Rak flee north. It is past time for Jisten to claim his lands formally and S’Rak’s advancing pregnancy can no longer be hidden. The dark servants are traveling, too—two separate teams work to reach S’Rak before the Koilathan crown can claim him, one to defend him physically and one to defend him legally. In the meantime, a Lythadi conqueror has arisen with the strength to unite the warring clans for the first time in history, and he won’t be satisfied until Koilatha once more belongs to the nomads.
